Only Murders in the Building (Season 4) šŸ™ļø

Everyoneā€™s favourite quirky, murder-solving podcasting trio has returned in a fourth season of Only Murders in the Building.

Ā

This time around, Mable (Selena Gomez), Charles (Steve Martin), and Oliver (Martin Short) must navigate the uncharted territories of Hollywood as studio executives have come to turn their podcast into a feature film starring Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria, and Zach Galifinakis.

Ā

The production of the movie takes an unsuspected turn after suspicion arises that someone on set may be a key suspect in a murder that will hit too close to home.

Ā

After giving up on last season, I was reluctant to jump back into a series that I felt had run itā€™s well dry, but lo and behold, this season doesnā€™t only breathe new life into the series; it may be its best season yet!

Ā

Iā€™m a huge fan of whodunnit murder mysteries; shoutout to my guy Hercule Poirot, yet Iā€™ve had a hard time with the zany, eccentric nature and the high-jinks affairs of this unlikely trio.

Ā

What makes this season work for me in ways the last two havenā€™t is the wildly impressive list of guest stars and recurring performers, who are able to add a different dynamic to the comedy elements and intermingling of characters.

Thereā€™s only so many ways you can spin these interactions and characters before it gets ridiculous with how absurd the murders become, and the character I felt was most improved upon, which also felt like a performance the creative team used to poke fun at itself, was Daā€™Vine Joy Randolph as detective Donna Williamsā€”she felt like she had free reign to flex her acting chops and deservedly so after cleaning up during the 2023 award season for her incredible performance in The Holdovers.

Ā

Using her detective character as comedic relief to poke holes in the absurd nature of how these murders are solved is exactly what this show needed.

I thought the stage play idea was genius after the cliffhanger from season two, but it ended up fizzling out when the story felt like it was just going in circles. This seasonā€™s change of scenery from the gritty streets of New York to the lavish life style of California was very much needed and helped grow the world in ways staying in the building would never have allowed.

It only took four seasons, but these three have finally grown on me. Now Iā€™ll have to impatiently wait for the final three episodes. Sigh.

Enjoy!
