Oddity 🩺
The Irish paranormal-horror film Oddity premiered at this years SXSW film festival and is now set to have its Canadian premiere on August 4th at Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival.
Oddity follows the story of a blind medium who is trying to process the murder of her twin sister, which becomes difficult when the information she’s been provided begins to conflict with the psychic powers she possesses, leading her to go back to the scene of the crime to uncover what truly happened.
This was as good as any horror movie that has come out this year, and for some it may be the best.
It does a tremendous job of building tension, which allows the well-placed jump scares (I definitely jumped a few times) to strike fear into those who lock into their viewing experience.
Like LONGLEGS, there was a lot of hype that I bought into prior to watching it, so my expectations going into this were unfairly high.
I found myself wanting a lot more out of the psycheward aspect of the story, which felt a little hollow, especially after the unravelling of this tightly knit mystery.
It’s strength lies in its ability to build on the lingering moments in the shadows, where instinctively you try to spot the scare before it happens, which ends up subverting your expectations and holding off longer than expected.
Oddity is a throwback horror film that never strides away from its leisure pace, which will work wonders for those seeking out the nostalgic feel of a classic jump scare.
Enjoy!
