On Sunday, June 9th, the 2024 edition of the largest animation film festival in the world, Annecyā€™s International Animation Film Festival, will commence in the ā€œPearl of the French Alpsā€ Annecy, France.

This event will bring together some of the animation industryā€™s most creative minds to bring awareness to projects that are currently works in progress - but that are worthy of your future consideration, and also the Global Premieres for some of the most anticipated animated feature and short films.

Iā€™m honored to be back for my second year, where Iā€™ll be covering films screening in competition for the festival grand prize, breaking down the need to know when it comes to upcoming releases, and potentially (I donā€™t want to jinx it) doing an interview with one of the composers of an upcoming Netflix film.

Iā€™ve compiled a list of the nine projects I'm excited for at this year's festival:Ā

1. Gill (South Korea - Director: Anh Jae Huun)

Ā

A boy called Gon was on the verge of death, when suddenly gills started to grow and he could breathe again. Kang Ha and his grandpa rescue Gon and together they become an odd family. This film explores lifeā€™s paradoxes, blessings and curses. It will encourage you to think about your own ā€œgillsā€ to help you get through your life.

2. Beckoning (UK, Serbia, Spain - Director: Sava Zivkovic)

Ā

A marooned female astronaut battles to survive a witch hunt in a dark, gritty, sci-fi, action-adventure genre film set against the Medieval Inquisition. Itā€™s ā€œGravityā€ meets ā€œThe Revenantā€ and will break the mould for an animated feature.

3. Glassworker (Pakistan - Director: Usman Riaz)

Ā

A young, gifted Vincent and his father Tomas run the finest glass workshop in the country. They find their lives upended by an approaching war in which they want no part. The arrival of an army colonel and his young, aspiring violinist daughter Alliz, puts the father-son relationship to the test. As Vincent and Alliz fall in love, they must find courage to confront their fathers.

4. 7 Missing (Israel - Director: Yuval Katz)

Ā

All about the journey of M, a post-traumatic secret agent, on his mission to return six missing agents from a mysterious shaman.

5. Look Back (Japan - Kiyotaka Oshiyama)

The overly confident Fujino and introverted Kyomoto couldn't be more different. Their love of drawing manga is the one thing connecting these contrasting girls. However, one day something happens to them that shatters everything. A heart-wrenching and impactful story about growing up.

6. The Storm (China - Director: Zhigang Yang)

Ā

Torrential rain leads you into a colorful world of traditional Chinese ink art. A century-old sunken ship emerges, mysterious theater troupes come to life again. With countless masks worn by people and a world filled with intricate changes, what kind of bizarre story is unfolding?

7. Elene Dariani (Georgia - Director:Elene Tavadze)

Who is Elene Dariani? Is she a mystification by poet Paolo, or a woman who found herself in his shadow? The film is based on a real poetic love story.

8. Totto-Chan: The Little Girl at the Window (Japan - Director: Shinnosuke Yakuwa)

At little Totto-Chanā€™s Tomoe School during the Second World War, she learns what racism and intolerance are, and discovers the grim reality of war.

9. Sultanaā€™s Dream (Spain, Germany - Director: Isabel Herguera)

Ā Taking its inspiration from a feminist sci-fi short story written in Bengal in 1905, InĆ©s sets out on a voyage of discovery around India in search of Ladyland, the utopian land of women.Ā
